9:30 AMSession: The Complexity of Cancer Care Today

Dr. Anna Barker
Dr. Marcel van den Brink
Dr. Richard Van Etten
Dr. Peter WT Pisters, moderator

President Nixon’s National Cancer Act of 1971 catalyzed the revolution in oncology and molecular medicine that made the development of innovative sophisticated therapies possible. These advances are complex, multidisciplinary and challenging to communicate to patients. This panel will discuss both sides of the issues: the complexity of establishing an understanding of various options for treatment, and then the complexity of establishing an understanding of treatment options.

10:45 AMSession: Medicine, Cancer and Artificial Intelligence

Dr. Sean Khozin
Dr. Eric Stahlberg
Dr. Cliff Hudis, moderator

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already impacting and influencing the ways we live and work and think. Implemented in an ethical and scientifically rigorous manner, its application to medicine in general, and oncology in particular, will advance our understanding of cancer and improve care and outcomes for cancer patients. This session will assess the present and consider the future of AI as it relates to medical care.

12:00 PMLunch with Keynote Remarks

U.S. Congressman Brett Guthrie

1:15 PMSession: The Crisis of Trust in Health Institutions Today

Dr. Hazem H. Chehabi
Dr. Sanjay Juneja
Dr. Edward S. Kim, moderator

One of the most significant challenges we face today is the society-wide crisis of confidence and loss of trust in the authority of institutions. Where medicine is concerned, despite the great advances in treatment and care, there has been a loss of trust in both the messenger and the message.

This session will address the root causes of this problem. Discussion will range from physicians not having enough time to establish relationships of trust with patients, to the impact of direct-to-consumer advertising that transforms patients into customers.

2:30 PMSession: New Ways –and Means– of Communicating About Cancer

Dr. Kat Arney
Dr. Shannon La Cava
Dr. Elaine Schattner
Prof. Kate Pickert, moderator

The advent and surging popularity of podcast, social media, and self-published articles online have become primary mediums for people seeking information about cancer, cancer diagnoses and treatments, and medicine in general.

This panel will explore how such new and reimagined methods of communicating can play a part in reestablishing trust in medical institutions, that is required to educate patients and motivate their compliance with care.
